Project Overview
Originally built in 1867, The Piano Building takes its name from its distinctive Grand Piano-shaped footprint. The historic building originally served as a wool warehouse before being acquired by Wyre Forest District Council.
Having remained disused since 2019, the Grade II listed building was earmarked for an ambitious transformation, bringing a historic landmark back into use as a modern mixed-use destination within Kidderminster town centre.
Appointed by Speller Metcalfe, Barrie Beard Electrical Contractors Ltd were responsible for delivering the full electrical installation throughout the building, working across the project from top to bottom.
The completed development combines modern working and leisure facilities while retaining the character and importance of the original listed building.

The Challenge
Working within a Grade II listed building presented a number of challenges, requiring the installation of modern electrical infrastructure while working sympathetically within an existing historic structure.
The project called for a coordinated approach across multiple electrical and specialist systems, with careful consideration given to how new services could be incorporated throughout the building.
From power and lighting through to life safety, security, communications and specialist installations, our team delivered the infrastructure required to support the building's new purpose while working within the constraints of its historic fabric.
The Transformation
The project has transformed a previously disused building into a modern mixed-use facility, helping bring a significant historic building back into active use within Kidderminster town centre.
The completed development provides facilities including:
Co-working and hybrid working spaces
Entertainment areas
Ground-floor restaurants and leisure facilities
Our electrical installation provides the essential infrastructure behind these spaces, from everyday power and lighting through to the specialist systems required to create a safe, secure and fully operational modern building.
The Result
Completed in October 2025, The Piano Building represents an impressive combination of historic preservation and modern development.
Barrie Beard Electrical Contractors are proud to have played a key role in the transformation, delivering a complete electrical installation capable of supporting the building's new life while respecting its heritage.
From a 19th-century wool warehouse to a modern destination for work, leisure and entertainment — The Piano Building has been given a new lease of life.
