Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil

 

Barrie Beard Electrical Contractors Ltd successfully delivered the full electrical installation for the Radiology Department at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, as part of Phases 2 and 3 of the hospital’s radiology upgrade. This project played a key role in enhancing critical healthcare infrastructure, providing modern, reliable electrical systems to support advanced diagnostic services. 

 

Working on behalf of NHS Wales, with Tilbury Douglas Engineering as the main contractor, the project was completed over a 36-week programme, reaching completion on 31 March 2026. Delivered within a live hospital environment, the works required careful coordination, strict adherence to safety standards, and a proactive approach to minimise disruption to ongoing operations. 

 

The scope of works encompassed a comprehensive electrical installation across the department. This included the installation of containment systems and distribution boards, along with the connection of the main distribution panel and submain wiring throughout the facility. General power and lighting systems were installed to meet the day-to-day operational needs of the department, while dedicated power supplies were carefully integrated to support specialist equipment within the X-ray and fluoroscopy rooms. 

 

In addition, mechanical power supplies were installed to serve plant located on the roof and within the courtyard areas. A critical element of the project involved the implementation of medical earthing systems across all designated medical locations, ensuring full compliance with healthcare regulations. The installation also included a public address system, followed by thorough testing and commissioning to ensure the entire system operated safely and efficiently. 

 

Barrie Beard Electrical Contractors Ltd provided a tailored solution designed to meet the complex demands of a modern radiology department. Particular attention was given to ensuring compliance with healthcare standards, delivering consistent and reliable power to critical equipment, and integrating seamlessly with the hospital’s existing infrastructure. 

 

The project was completed on time and to a high standard, resulting in a fully operational, future-ready radiology department. The upgraded facility now benefits from safe, compliant electrical systems and a robust infrastructure capable of supporting advanced medical imaging technologies, ultimately contributing to improved patient care and operational efficiency.
