John Taylor School, Rugeley

 

Barrie Beard Ltd. successfully delivered the full electrical installation package for the new Rugeley John Taylor School, constructed by BAM Construction on behalf of John Taylor Multi Academy Trust. 

 

Located on the former Rugeley Power Station site, the new educational facility has been designed to provide continuous education from Nursery (3+) through to Post-16, creating a modern learning environment capable of serving the local community for generations to come. 

 

The development comprises a mixed-use educational facility across two and three storeys, incorporating classroom teaching zones, specialist technology areas, science laboratories, a main hall, library, dining facilities and associated support spaces. The scheme also includes a separate sports hall building connected to the main school via an external walkway, together with extensive external sports facilities including two all-weather MUGA pitches and three outdoor athletic pitch areas. 

 

Barrie Beard Ltd. was appointed to undertake the complete electrical installation package throughout the development.

A key element of the project was the installation of a comprehensive lighting system designed to provide a safe, comfortable and energy-efficient learning environment. 

 

Lighting was installed throughout all teaching spaces, circulation routes, communal areas, sports facilities and external environments. Emergency lighting systems were incorporated throughout the building to ensure compliance with current regulations and to provide safe evacuation routes during emergency situations. 

 

The development also benefits from a fully addressable DALI lighting control system, enabling intelligent control of lighting throughout the facility. This provides enhanced flexibility, reduced energy consumption and improved operational efficiency while creating optimal lighting conditions for students, staff and visitors. 

 

To support the electrical demands of this modern educational facility, Barrie Beard Ltd. delivered a robust electrical distribution infrastructure throughout the development. 

 

The installation included small power systems serving classrooms, laboratories, technology suites, administration areas and communal spaces, ensuring reliable power provision across the entire campus. 

 

The distribution network was carefully designed to provide safe, efficient and future-proof power distribution capable of supporting the evolving requirements of a modern educational environment. 

 

In addition to the internal electrical services, Barrie Beard Ltd. delivered extensive external lighting installations across the site. 

 

This included lighting to pathways, access routes, external communal areas and sports facilities, together with specialist lighting systems serving the all-weather MUGA pitches. 

 

The external lighting design enhances safety, accessibility and usability of the site while providing a welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors during evening and winter operating hours. 

 

 

The project incorporated several specialist systems designed to improve accessibility, communication and future operational flexibility. 

 

An induction loop system was installed to support hearing-impaired users and ensure inclusivity throughout key areas of the school. 

 

Barrie Beard Ltd. also installed the containment infrastructure supporting the school's data network, fire alarm systems, security systems and Building Management System (BMS), providing the essential backbone for the building's technology and life safety systems.
