Bringing a Birmingham Landmark Back to Life: Typhoo Tea Building
Unused for more than 40 years, the historic Typhoo Tea Building in Digbeth, Birmingham, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art broadcasting hub for the BBC, providing a new home for more than 700 staff across television and radio.
Barrie Beard Electrical Contractors Ltd. was proud to play a key role in this significant redevelopment, working alongside BAM Construction to deliver the shell and core electrical installation over a 35-week programme, completed in March 2026.
Our scope included a comprehensive electrical base build, incorporating high and low voltage supplies, lighting, power, containment and infrastructure for future systems, including CCTV, access control and specialist installations. External lighting was also installed to improve safety, accessibility and usability across the site.
The project required a robust and future-proof electrical solution capable of supporting the building's next phase of development while respecting the importance and heritage of this iconic Birmingham landmark.
We are proud to have contributed to the regeneration of the Typhoo Tea Building and to have played a part in helping shape the future of Digbeth, while preserving an important piece of the area's industrial heritage.
